Princetown is a
small town nestled by the estuary of the beautiful Gellibrand River which runs
around the flanks of the mighty Otway ranges. The Great Ocean Road emerges from the Otway ranges to greet the ocean again at Princetown. The limestone cliffs around Princetown are rich in fossils and gemstones and “Australites” have been found along the shores. Princetown lies on the border, between the Otway and Port Campbell National Parks. |

The estuarine valley of the Gellibrand River is alive with fauna. Kangaroos,
wallabies, echidnas, wombats and other marsupials and native birds can also been
seen in their favourite habitat. The river estuary is broad enough to allow fishing, canoeing and swimming. There are great coastal walks around the river mouth and the beach side cliffs. There is provision for camping and caravans near the river help make Princetown a fantastic destination. The beach just west of Princetown, and the steps cut into the cliff down to it, were named after the early pioneer, Hugh Gibson. Gibson Steps is one of Australia’s grandest sand beaches with cliffs to the west, reefs and limestone towers in the distance. When the swell is small enough there is excellent fishing and sand bank surfing to be had along this beach. |
